Class Title: Recreation Superintendent
Department: Parks & Recreation Department
Salary: $77,339 – $99,001

holidays. This position may be participating in a *VEBA program.

A. GENERAL PURPOSE:
Under the direction of the Parks & Recreation Director, supervises recreational programming,
aquatic facility, camp center, sports programs, special events, and youth camps. Work varies,
requiring interpretive judgment and decision making in variation from established standards and
procedures.

B. SUPERVISION RECEIVED:
Works under the general supervision of the Director of Parks and Recreation.

C. SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
Supervises full and part time staff as assigned and approximately 90-plus seasonal and temporary
recreation employees with varied responsibilities and skills. Provides guidance, training, instruction
and technical assistance needed for recreational programming, aquatic facility, camp center, sports
programs, special events, and youth camp personnel.

Recreation/ Sports (40%):
a. Develop, plan, schedule and supervise recreational, sports, partnership and contract
programs.
b. Write and administer grant funding for recreational and sports programming.
c. Develop, plan and implement new recreational opportunities including; sports, health and
wellness, cultural and leisure programs.
d. Plans, schedules, and implements program oversight to provide quality services and to
ensure acceptability and conformance to standards.
e. Reviews and oversees the Picnic in the Park concert series including contracts, vendors,
sponsors and publications.
f. Reviews salaries, purchases and expenditure requisitions.
g. Accountable for funds, assets and materials within their scope and oversight where failure
to provide continual attention could result in substantial loss or damage.
h. Prepares annual program budgets; analyzes and evaluates costs; coordinates program
purchasing requirements; reviews and monitors budget appropriations.

i. Prepares financial, capital and operating statements reconciling from new or raw data or
limited information.
j. Purchase materials and equipment as required.
k. Supervises seasonal recreation/sports employees; trains, evaluates and disciplines as
necessary.
l. Receives and acts upon inquiries, complaints; responds to emergency calls at any time
including outside of regular scheduled hours.
m. Responsible for frequent contacts with the public and fellow employees; requiring
considerable tactfulness and communication skills of complex information.
n. Completes site visits to evaluate programs, counselors and participants to determine public
needs and how to increase efficiency and value.
o. Oversees publication of a variety of brochures, calendars, letters, posters, news releases,
flyers, and related communications regarding park and recreation programs.
p. Promotes park and recreation activities for the community; live and recorded television and
radio advertising.

Youth Camps (25%):
a. Develop, plan, schedule and supervise afterschool and summer youth camps.
b. Administer grant funding for afterschool and youth camp programing.
c. Develops curriculum and outings to enhance participant experience.
d. Contracts and schedules vendors for travel and outings.
e. Receives and acts upon inquiries, complaints; responds to emergency calls at any time.
f. Completes site visits to evaluate camps, counselors and participants to determine public
needs and how to increase efficiency and value.
g. Works with the Director in implementing program policies related to programing, as well as
reviewing and suggesting new policies for consideration of approval.
h. Responsible for frequent contacts with the public and fellow employees; requiring
considerable tactfulness, diplomacy and communication skills of complex information.
i. Prepares annual program budgets; analyzes and evaluates costs; coordinates program
purchasing requirements; reviews and monitors budget appropriations.
j. Conducts or supervises preparation of program reports.
k. Assists preparation of budget estimates and reports.
l. Reviews salaries, purchases and expenditure requisitions.

Aquatics (25%):
a. Plans, schedules, and implements aquatic programing to include; swim lessons, lap swim,
public swim, club swim, special events and other aquatic programs as developed and
assigned.
b. Assures that safety standards and precautions are followed with programing, facility and
management activities.
c. Oversees and/or conducts training of staff in water safety, first aid, and CPR; ensures that
all certifications of staff are maintained. Ensures high program standards are followed;
provides regular in-service training to staff as needed.
d. Works with the Director in implementing policies related to programing, as well as
reviewing and suggesting new policies for consideration of approval.
e. Performs regular safety inspections of pools and equipment to reduce hazards and to
provide maximum safety to the patrons.
f. Receives and acts upon inquiries, complaints; responds to emergency calls at any time.
g. Prepares annual program budgets; analyzes and evaluates costs; coordinates program
purchasing requirements; reviews and monitors budget appropriations.
h. Completes site visits to evaluate camps, counselors and participants to determine public
needs and how to increase efficiency and value.
i. Assists preparation of budget estimates and reports.

Peripheral duties (10%):
a. Serves as a member of various employee and community committees, as assigned.
b. May act as Parks and Recreation Director in their absence.
c. Other duties as assigned.
