This position will be filled on a “seasonal” “temporary” or “short-term” basis dependent upon the applicant’s availability and timeframe worked, past and present. This position will be filled to work for the approximate time period of May 2024 – September 2024.

Performs a variety of unskilled and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and operation of all landscaping/urban forestry within the jurisdiction of the City’s parks, greenways, open spaces and grounds.
Works under the supervision of the Urban Forester/Landscape Foreman
May supervise community service workers or temporary employees as required and assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

It is expected that every employee should be on time, fully prepared, every day that the employee is scheduled to work.
As directed, orient, train and supervise the work activities of community service workers and or temporary employees. Assure work is performed in accordance with sound safety practices set forth by Urban Forestry/Landscape Foreman.
Perform all functions of landscape maintenance at a high level of proficiency, such as pruning, planting, and removing of shrubs, flowers, and trees.
Proficiently operate all assigned equipment and vehicles to perform any operation within the capacity of the machine as necessary to accomplish required work.
Assists Urban Forestry by watering newly planted trees.
Routine watering and maintenance to downtown hanging baskets.
Performs other duties as assigned within Parks Maintenance.
Maintenance techniques in the care, construction and operation of City parks systems, including athletic fields, tennis courts, playgrounds, parks, shelters, open spaces and green belts.
Operates numerous types of equipment such as self-propelled commercial mowers, string trimmers, tractors, hedge trimmers, chain saws, edger and numerous landscape hand tools.
Desired Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience:
Graduation from high school or GED equivalent, and
Two years’ experience in landscape maintenance
Any equivalent combination of relevant education and experience.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Must have sufficient experience in the field of landscape maintenance to have acquired an extensive knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in all phases, including a basic general knowledge of shrubs, flowers, trees, and irrigation systems.
Working knowledge of equipment, materials and supplies used in landscape and forestry maintenance.
Working knowledge of first aid and applicable safety precautions.
Skill in the operation of listed tools and equipment.
Ability to work independently and to complete daily activities according to work schedule; ability to work effectively as a team member; ability to communicate orally and in writing; ability to work safely; ability to understand, follow, and transmit written and oral instructions; ability to establish effective working relationships with employees, supervisors, and the public.
Valid Montana State Driver’s License.
Knowledge of Landscape Maintenance
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USE:
Pickup truck; lawn and landscaping equipment, including tractors, mowers, edger, string trimmers, hedge trimmers, chain saws, pumps, sprinklers, and miscellaneous hand and power tools for landscape maintenance.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to risk of electrical shock.
The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.
